The Karakoram Highway (KKH), often called the Friendship Highway, is considered the 8th wonder of the world. It connects Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region with Kashgar, tracing one of the ancient Silk Road’s routes. Constructed between 1968 and 1977 by Pakistani and Chinese workers under challenging conditions, the highway spans rugged mountain terrain and deep valleys, linking diverse ethnic groups including the Kyrgyz and Tajiks. Along the route, travelers witness spectacular sights such as the Sarykol (Yellow Lake) valley, the Gez River canyon, Kongur and Muztagh Ata mountains, and Karakul Lake.
