Overview

Kashgar, located in China’s Xinjiang Province, is a historic city renowned as a vital trading hub on the ancient Silk Road. It boasts a unique blend of ethnic cultures, rich history, and stunning natural landscapes. Key attractions include the majestic Abakhhoja Tomb, the vast Id Kah Mosque, serene Karakul Lake, the vibrant old and new bazaars, the mysterious Stones City, and the ancient Three Immortals Buddhist Caves. Kashgar’s airport connects it with major cities domestically and internationally, making it accessible for travelers. The city comes alive during festivals like the Corban, Roza, and NuoRuzi, where visitors can experience authentic local traditions and celebrations. The best time to visit Kashgar, especially via the scenic Karakoram Highway, is from June to October.

The Karakoram Highway (KKH), often called the Friendship Highway, is considered the 8th wonder of the world. It connects Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region with Kashgar, tracing one of the ancient Silk Road’s routes. Constructed between 1968 and 1977 by Pakistani and Chinese workers under challenging conditions, the highway spans rugged mountain terrain and deep valleys, linking diverse ethnic groups including the Kyrgyz and Tajiks. Along the route, travelers witness spectacular sights such as the Sarykol (Yellow Lake) valley, the Gez River canyon, Kongur and Muztagh Ata mountains, and Karakul Lake. The KKH also offers access to passes leading into Tajikistan and Pakistan’s Hunza Valley, making it a unique journey through history, culture, and breathtaking landscapes.
